International Animal Rescue (IAR) has released video footage from 2013 to mark World Environment Day showing what it says is the devastating impact deforestation is having on the precious orangutan habitat in Indonesia. The scene was filmed in 2013 in West Kalimantan when the group's Protection Unit was carrying out numerous rescue and translocation operations to remove orangutans from areas of deforestation to places of safety. The IAR says the orangutan was frantically seeking refuge as earthmoving and tree-felling machines decimated much of the forest around him. The group says their team was able to rescue the orangutan and bring him to safety. According to the IAR, scenes like this are becoming more and more frequent in Indonesia. They claim deforestation has caused the orangutan population to plummet, with habitats destroyed and orangutans left to starve and die.
